What is El Este National Park?
El Este National Park is the Dominican Republic's second-largest national park, a 420 km² territory combining some of the Caribbean's best coral reefs, mangroves, tropical dry forests, caves with Taíno rock art, and the famous Saona and Catalina islands. This is the country's most-visited natural destination, offering a complete Caribbean biodiversity experience from ocean depths to interior forests. Its controlled access has preserved an ecosystem that otherwise would have been destroyed by mass tourism.

History
El Este National Park was created in 1975 by president Joaquín Balaguer to protect the southeast coast's unique ecosystems. The territory included lands used by agricultural and fishing communities for centuries. Within the park are Taíno settlement remnants with painted caves documenting this people's life before colonization.
