Bayahibe was a small fishing village until the 1980s when the first European diving operators recognized the exceptional quality of its reefs. The declaration of the National Park of the East in 1975 protected the marine ecosystem, allowing corals and marine life to recover from decades of overfishing. Today, Bayahibe's reefs are among the best preserved in the Caribbean.
