History
Cabarete was a sleepy fishing village until 1988 when Frenchman Jean Laporte discovered its winds were perfect for windsurfing. Word spread quickly, and by the 1990s it had become the world windsurf capital, followed by kitesurfing in the 2000s. Today it regularly hosts world championships in both sports.
