Cerro del Pájaro Lookout

From the Cerro del Pájaro Lookout in El Peñón, Barahona, you take in a jaw-dropping panorama: the Bay of Neyba, the Sierra de Bahoruco, and the Caribbean stretching to the horizon. Getting there is half the adventure — bouncing up dirt tracks through coffee groves and dry forest where hawks ride the thermals. At the top, the breeze kills the heat and the only soundtrack is the wind. Zero tourist infrastructure, just a raw, off-the-grid spot for photographers and travelers chasing the real, undiscovered DR. Bring water, wear closed-toe shoes, and leave no trace.

A natural balcony over El Peñón and the bay, the hill gets its name from the abundance of birds nesting in its cliffs. Historically it served as a lookout for fishermen and sailors scanning for schools of fish and incoming storms. Today it's a must-stop at sunset to watch the sun dip behind the offshore cays.
