Laguna de los Patos

Tucked away in Las Guáranas, Duarte province, Laguna de los Patos is a freshwater wetland fringed with riverside vegetation where wild ducks, herons, and other waterbirds hang out. It's a low-key spot for birdwatching and nature photography in the heart of the Cibao region. Informal trails let you wander the shoreline and take in the local flora. You'll reach it via a neighborhood road from town; wear comfy shoes, bring bug spray, and respect the wildlife. Out in Las Guáranas, Laguna de los Patos formed naturally in the low-lying lands of the Cibao, fed by rainfall and underground springs. Its name comes from the abundance of wild ducks and migratory birds that use it as a refuge. Back in the day, it served as a watering hole for cattle and a community gathering spot; today it's a local recreation area and a haven for spotting aquatic wildlife in a rural setting.
