El Caño Waterfall

El Caño Waterfall, in Las Matas de Farfán, serves up a crystal-clear cascade born in the mountains that feeds natural swimming holes perfect for a refreshing dip. The short trail cuts through humid forest shaded by guácima and almácigo trees — ideal for an easy, unhurried walk. You can drive right to the entrance and it's just a few minutes' scramble over rocks and roots to the water. Bring water, bug spray, and shoes with grip; there are zero facilities or food vendors. Perfect for a half-day of raw nature in the deep south, easily paired with a stroll through the town center or a road trip toward San Juan.

Fed by the Loma de Cabrera, this waterfall forms cold, crystal-clear pools that locals (matenses) have used for generations to escape the southern heat. The name comes from the rocky chute (caño) where the river launches into the void.
