Valle de los Cactus Overlook

The Valle de los Cactus Overlook in Las Matas de Farfán serves up a one-of-a-kind 360° panorama of the Deep South: towering cacti, the Sierra de Neiba mountains, and the dry valley stretching to the horizon. Get there early to dodge the midday heat and catch the golden light for photos. Pack water, a hat, and sturdy shoes — you'll drive most of the way and walk short stretches. A mandatory pit stop on the Barahona–Santo Domingo run to soak in the raw scale of the real Dominican landscape.

From this vantage point you command the Valle de Neiba, an arid zone where cacti and guayacán trees (tropical hardwoods) define the scenery. Historically it was a cattle droving route between the plateau and the basin. Today it's a required stop to appreciate the unique geology of the southwest and how xerophytic flora has adapted to the dry climate.
