What is Cerro del Viento Lookout?

From the Cerro del Viento Lookout in Loma de Cabrera, you command sweeping views over the border valley and the Cordillera Central. A steady breeze cools the climb and clears the sightlines all the way to Dajabón and Haiti. Sunset is prime time for panoramic shots and that high-altitude freshness. Bring water, sturdy shoes, and your camera — you can drive right to the summit. A mandatory stop on the northwest loop to take in the Dominican north’s dry, rugged geography.

History

This hill overlooks the valley where the Dajabón River rises, the natural border with Haiti. A strategic vantage point since colonial times for watching the passage to the central plateau, it now serves as a natural lookout. From up top you can trace the layout of Loma de Cabrera, a town founded by sugarcane and cattle families along the riverbanks, and pick out the peaks that mark the borderline. The constant wind funneling up the slope gave the spot its name — a silent witness to cross-border trade and daily frontier life.
