What is Playa Los Patos?
Playa Los Patos is one of the Dominican Republic's most unique natural wonders, a beach where a river of cold fresh water emerges directly from the mountain and flows into the Caribbean, creating at the shore a perfectly delicious blend of waters that swimmers exploit to enjoy both temperatures simultaneously. This unique phenomenon—the collision of river and sea water—adds a playful dimension to this beach of black stones and dark sand characteristic of the Barahona coast.

History
The Los Patos River is born in the Sierra de Bahoruco mountains and has flowed to this same coastal point for millennia. Taíno indigenous communities used this location as sacred due to the rarity of the water blend. The south coast fishing peoples have known this place always, though tourism began arriving in recent decades as Barahona was discovered as a destination.
