What is Cerro de la Loma del Cacao Viewpoint (Paraíso)?

The Cerro de la Loma del Cacao Viewpoint serves up the ultimate postcard of Paraíso: a lush green valley, a brilliant blue bay, and the Sierra de Bahoruco rising dramatically in the background. Getting up there is a breeze—the road is paved and there's parking. Hit it early or at golden hour for unreal photos. Bring water, a hat, and the willingness to just sit a while staring at the horizon. It's a mandatory pit stop on the Barahona-Paraíso run to soak in the raw grandeur of the Deep South, no filter needed.

History

This hill towers over the valley where Paraíso was born. Back in the day, it was the key landmark for the *conucos* (small family farms) of coffee and cacao that drove the local economy. From this vantage point, you could spot the dirt trails (*trochas*) winding down to Barahona. Today, it serves as a natural lookout where you can take in the mountains, the coastal plain, and the sea in one sweeping glance.
