What is San Felipe Fortress?
San Felipe Fortress is Puerto Plata's most important historical monument and one of the Caribbean's best-preserved colonial military strongholds. Built in the 16th century to defend the city from pirate and privateer attacks, this coral stone structure with its defensive moat and original cannons dominates the headland separating Puerto Plata's bay from the Atlantic. From its ramparts, you'll enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the city, the Cordillera Septentrional mountain range, and the Caribbean Sea. The small interior museum houses colonial archaeological pieces and tells the turbulent history of this Caribbean coast.

Construction of San Felipe Fortress began in 1564 on orders from Governor Arias de Herrera as a response to constant attacks by English and Dutch pirates. It's named in honor of Spain's King Philip II. Serving not only as a defensive stronghold but also as a prison, it notably held Dominican independence hero Juan Pablo Duarte during a brief period of political persecution in 1844.
