What is Gri-Gri Lagoon?
Gri-Gri Lagoon is one of the Caribbean's most extraordinary mangrove ecosystems, a labyrinth of natural channels between centuries-old mangroves hosting dozens of bird, fish, crustacean, and reptile species in Río San Juan. Boat tours through its tranquil emerald-colored waters wind between mangrove roots reflected in the water while golden sunlight penetrates in rays, creating almost mystical images. At the tour's end, the boat opens to the sea where you can swim in a marine cave and visit La Cueva de las Golondrinas (Swallows' Cave) beach.

History
Gri-Gri Lagoon has been part of Río San Juan's coastal ecosystem since ancient times. The Taíno name references the birds that once abundantly populated the area. During the 20th century, local fishermen used it as a refuge and fishing ground. Community tour organization began in the 1990s as an economic alternative to fishing, transforming fishermen themselves into guides.
