What is Playa Grande?
Playa Grande is one of the Dominican Republic's most impressive beaches, a 2-kilometer stretch of thick golden sand bordered by green cliffs on the north coast near Río San Juan. Its generous waves have made it a reference point for surfers, while its intense turquoise waters and spectacular cliff formations make it irresistible for photographers and nature lovers. Unlike southern beaches, Playa Grande maintains a vigorous Atlantic character with unique dramatic scenery found nowhere else in the country.

History
Playa Grande was discovered by international tourism in the 1980s when adventurous surfers began reporting its excellent waves. For decades it was the north coast's best-kept secret. In the 2000s hotel development began but fortunately remained controlled, preserving much of its natural beauty and public beach access.
