What is Museum of the Dominican Man?
The Museum of the Dominican Man is the Dominican Republic's and the Caribbean's most important anthropological institution, an essential window into the three cultures that forged Dominican identity: Taíno, African, and Spanish. Its four floors house over 35,000 pieces including Taíno artifacts, representations of African cultures brought during slavery, expressions of Dominican religious syncretism, and celebrations of national carnival. It is impossible to understand the Dominican Republic without visiting this museum.

The museum was founded in 1973 by intellectual Emilio Rodríguez Demorizi and is now directed by the Ministry of Culture. Its Taíno collections are unique in the world, featuring archaeological pieces from pre-Columbian civilizations inhabiting Hispaniola for millennia before European arrival. The carnival collection preserves the rich tradition of masks and costumes celebrating Dominican identity.
